Nova
House
Built as a
single family dwelling approximately 65 years ago, the house has
been retro-fitted numerous times to accommodate up to 12 women and
children in crisis. However, the aging infrastructure is giving
way and further retrofits are no longer feasible. Due to the conditions
and age of the facility, it is now becoming a vital health and safety
issue for the abused children and women who live there: recently
for example, sewer problems have caused the residents and staff
to be on evacuation alert. Within an aging and overcrowded shelter,
this increase in occupancy has led to numerous difficulties relating
to the safety and comfort of our clients.
Nova House can no longer accommodate the influx
in residents, and unfortunately must redirect clients to other
shelters,
some as far away as Simcoe. Currently the facility can only accommodate
up to 12 women and their children and we must turn women and
children away on a regular basis. Not being able to provide immediate
and
imperative assistance to women and children in need is a very tragic
situation for all concerned.
Welland

A new facility
was constructed in Welland in 1996 and currently accommodates
10 women and children. The facility is accessible to people with
mobility challenges.
In 2002/2003
the Welland Centre provided safe refuge for 94 abused women and
51 abused children.
