Women’s Place of South Niagara Inc. has long been a safe haven providing shelter and support to abused women and their children who have either faced abuse themselves or been victims of these frightening situations. Currently the organization operates two shelters for abused women and their children: Welland Centre in Welland, and Nova House in Niagara Falls.

The mission of Women’s Place is to empower abused women and their children by providing safe shelter and intervention services.

Some Startling Statistics That Must Not Be Ignored

• In a one-year period (2003/2004), 58,486 women and 36,840 children sought refuge at a shelter in Canada.



• On any one given day, approximately 300 women and children will be referred elsewhere because the shelter was full.



• In 2004/05, Women’s Place Niagara and Welland referred … women and children due to lack of space in our own shelters.



• 1 out of every 2 women in Canada has been physically or sexually assaulted at least once



• 21% of women are assaulted while pregnant



• 83% of women with disabilities will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime



• Stats show that men who abuse their spouses are more likely to assault their own children



• There is an average of 25 female victims of spousal homicide in Ontario each year



• Aboriginal women are three times more likely to experience violence than others



• More than 1 million children in Canada have witnessed violence in their own homes



• Children that witness violence at home are more likely to grow up to be perpetrators of violence or victims themselves
