Nova House Campaign

History of Women's Place

Nova House, a community-based organization committed to helping victims of domestic violence, has been in operation since 1982. This facility has provided safe shelter and counselling services to thousands of abused women and their children throughout the years. The founding of Nova House began as a group known as Niagara Women in Crisis in 1977.

Nova House is the only emergency residential service for abused women and their children (infant to 16 years old), that serves the Niagara Falls and Fort Erie areas.

On April 1, 1997, Nova House amalgamated with its sister shelter, Women's Place (Welland & District) Inc. The new organization became known as Women's Place of South Niagara Inc.

Nova House has a strong profile in the community and is highly regarded for its excellence in providing emergency residential and intervention services to victims of domestic violence.

In the 2002/2003 year Nova House provided a safe haven for 75 abused children and 120 abused women. Last year, Women's Place received over 3200 crisis calls from women in South Niagara and provided out-reach services to over 800 additional women from our communities.
