LEGAL ASSISTANCE
Along with abuse can come all kinds of legal tangles that can wreak havoc on your psyche as powerfully as the abuse itself.
In addition to providing information and safety planning advice related to leaving your abusive partner, our legal advocates offer:
- Basic legal information and referrals, including referrals to lawyers
- Assistance in applying for custody, access and child/spousal support
- Accompaniment to court and other legal appointments such as legal aid and lawyer meetings
- Assistance in applying for peace bonds or restraining orders
- Help in filling out and reviewing legal documents such as Family Court applications and financial statements
As well, we can help you deal with police, lawyers and the criminal justice system; and inform you about issues relating to violence against women and the law.
Reminder: You don’t need to stay at one of our shelters to access this free, confidential service. Simply call our 24-hour Crisis Line at one of the telephone numbers shown elsewhere on this page. We will be glad to discuss your legal concerns and talk with you about next steps.
