History
of the Women's Place Shelter's
|
The Welland Centre Shelter was originally founded
by a group then known as Women's Place Welland
& District Inc.
The
Shelter officially opened in 1981 on Regent Street
and within one week the Shelter was full. Formed
as a group dedicated to the need for safe Shelter
for abused women and their children, Women's Place
Welland & District operated their Regent Street
Shelter for fifteen years before land was purchased
and the new Shelter was built. In February of
1996, the new Shelter officially opened and we
moved to our current Shelter site.
Nova
House, the Niagara Falls site of Women's Place
of South Niagara Inc. began as the group Niagara
Women In Crisis in 1977. On April 1st, 1983, Nova
House was officially purchased, crisis lines were
installed and the Shelter became a 24 hour, 365
day a year service for abused women and children.
On
April 1st, 1997, Niagara Women In Crisis (Nova
House) amalgamated with Women's Place Welland
& District to form Women's Place of South Niagara
Inc. One new organization was born along with
our new logo. |
